Your electric scooter’s battery is one of the things you should check regularly to make sure your ride starts up smoothly and performs as expected.
A battery contract is recommended when the scooter is left unused for several weeks.
Contrary to popular belief, a 12 volt battery is not actually 12 volts!
Twelve volts is a nominal term often used by manufacturers to distinguish one type of battery from another.
A fully charged 12V battery that has not been charged for several hours or days will stabilize the charge with approximately 12.6 volts across its terminals.
Consider that any battery with a voltage of about 12 V is almost completely discharged under the conditions.
A battery with an open circuit voltage of about 12.0V or 12.1V means that only 20-25% of usable power remains.
It won’t last long because the battery is dead or has already had too many cycles.
You can also only do a limited number of deep cycles without fully charging the battery.
A 12V battery can only provide useful power over a limited range.
When the battery is fully charged, running or under load, when the lights are on or the scooter is started, the voltage rises from 14 volts to 10.5 volts.
If the battery is not charged, it will not stay at 14V for more than a few seconds.
The minimum load limit is 10.5 V. This limit is useful for testing but not satisfactory for practical use.
Care for the scooter battery;۲
If your scooter won’t start, you probably don’t need to look any further than the battery to find the source of the problem.
Minor inspections and regular maintenance can significantly increase battery life.
Replacing the battery is sometimes not possible, as keeping the scooter battery in a difficult place prevents most riders from having trouble.
With just a few minutes of maintenance each month, you can keep your scooter’s battery in top condition and improve its durability.
- The battery should be 100% charged when the lights start going off, the starter hums, or the horn sounds faintly.
- If you have not used the battery for 2 weeks or more, you should charge it before using it again.
Battery repair procedures;
Remove the battery
Wear safety glasses or goggles and rubber gloves before removing the battery from the scooter.
To remove the battery from the e-scooter, you must spray the battery and remove the negative (-) wire with a screwdriver before moving on to the positive (+) wires.
After the two wires are removed, remove the battery tape or tape to avoid holding the drain tube and gently remove the battery.
Clean the battery;
Now take the uncut battery to a clean place and don’t forget to put it in some newspapers.
Before opening the battery doors, clean the top of any dirt or paint.
If there is rust on the connectors, use a wire brush to clean them properly.
Use a dry cloth to remove dirt and debris, then spray battery cleaner on a lint-free cloth and use it to clean both terminals.
If the overflow tube appears plugged, dirty or clogged, spray battery cleaner through the tube.
To make sure the pipe is completely clean, run hot water over it and blow out the water with compressed air.
Reinstall the tube;
Check electrolyte level;
If the battery is a lead-acid battery containing liquid, check the electrolyte (fluid) level in all compartments and the state of charge of all cells in the front of the scooter battery.
All parts should be below the top fill line.
If the electrolyte level appears low, deionized water should be added to the cells.
Use tweezers to remove the filling to fill them.
There are fillers, some are usually threaded and some are straight, so you have to twist them in the direction they point.
Check the interior for sulfur and deposits before filling the cell.
Tap water can contain minerals that can reduce battery life and performance, so don’t use it!
After charging the battery, turn off all chargers.
Charge the battery;
If the battery is overcharged for any reason, a scooter or battery charger should be used and battery chargers rated for more than 2 amps should not be used.
Make sure the charger has the correct voltage for the battery (6v, 36v or 48v for large electric scooters like the 1200w super turbo electric scooter).
Remember to check your scooter’s fuse when the battery dies.
Typically, the backup battery is stored in a clip on the left side of your turntable.
Before installing the battery, you must replace the blown fuse.
Check the inside or outside of the fuse for rust or corrosion and replace if necessary.
Reinsert the battery;
Reinstall the battery in the reverse order of the instructions above so that the transfer tube is in the correct position.
Check terminals, wires and case for damage or loose connections.
Replace worn rubber belts and clean the threads with a carburetor cleaner or wire brush.
To replace the battery connector, you should be able to get one from your local scooter shop.
Check the battery with a voltmeter or hydrometer.
Battery storage;
Taking care of a scooter battery can be a daunting task. This is because a battery that has not been used for a long time cannot be recharged.
Always keep your scooter above freezing point.
If stored outdoors, remove the battery and store it in a warmer location. This will prevent the battery from freezing and exploding.
Do not place the battery on metal or concrete every time you remove it from your scooter.
Instead, it should be placed on non-conductive surfaces such as wood. A battery encased in metal or concrete will charge over time.
Also remember to bring a battery charger or tender.
To extend battery life, charge it at least once a month with a reliable battery charger.
